Mission 1

To promote world-class researches for satellite remote sensing
In our center, there are many of researchers having various academic backgrounds from faculty of engineering, faculty of agriculture, faculty of humanities, faculty of economics, faculty of medicine and health sciences. We promote interdisciplinary researches. We would make stronger effort to enhance the partnerships with overseas researchers. Thus we have 5 sections for conducting several satellite remote sensing researches.

Information Technologies Section
Information Technologies Session focuses on the research and development to operate large volumes of satellite data rapidly by using newest information processing technology such as “image processing”, “machine learning” , “artificial intelligence”, etc.

Ground Movement Monitoring Section
Ground Movement Monitoring Section grapples with the problems related to earthquake, volcano, landslide, topography, geography, disaster prevention, environment, construction, and management etc. by observing change of positions regarding to surface/construction and topographic change.

Disaster Prevention and Environmental Issues Section
Disaster Prevention and Environment Issues Session researches on utilization of satellite data in terms of disaster and environmental aspect by acquiring and analyzing the information about distribution quantities and status of soil, water, vegetation, etc.

Innovation and New Field Section
Information Technologies Session focuses on the research and development to operate large volumes of satellite data rapidly by using newest information processing technology such as “image processing”, “machine learning” , “artificial intelligence”, etc.

Information Systems Section
Information System Session aims to provide efficient and feasible information system for research development using satellite data, and wrestles with the problems to solve these challenging works.

Mission 2

To cultivate human resources capable of promoting a wide range of researches for satellite remote sensing and space technology
Data of satellite remote sensing are only simple numerical value, but large quantity of data. To handle enormous value of data, it is imperative to promote human resource having advanced and specialized knowledge like data-scientist who can solve problems by big data analysis technique and/or by visualization and analysis using IoT. Therefore, we accept many of domestic and overseas students and trainees especially from Asian region, and cultivate human resource capable. We conduct research and educational collaboration with Udayana University (Indonesia) for 10 years, and deliver lectures to both classes (Japan and Indonesia) concurrently by connecting each class using internet. And we introduce double degree program that can produce many of quality master and doctoral degree recipients. These activities will be spread to the other universities in Asian and South American regions.

Mission 3

To contribute for disaster operations and improve public’s safety and security
Once large-scale disaster is occurred, it is extremely important to grasp what happens and where initially. It took time to grasp overall situation by East Japan great earthquake disaster, so initial rescue activities couldn’t work properly. In consequence, many people passed away even if they saved from the quake’s destructive shaking and tsunami of the earthquake. In near future, Japan might be suffered from large-scaled disasters such as Nankai Trough giant earthquake, Tokyo inland earthquake, frightful super-jumbo typhoon, and torrential heavy rain. To prepare for disasters, we research on analyze the damage outbreak situation (what kind of damage and where) speedy using satellite remote sensing immediately after disaster occurred, and provide damage situation information to administrative agencies and disaster related agencies in collaboration with Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) and other domestic and foreign universities.

Mission 4

To promote of local industry and create new industry/business for space utilization technology
We implement results of researches on satellite remote sensing and space technology utilization to the society by industry-academia-government collaboration. For utilizing the research results widely, newer industries and/or services linking with worldwide users and us can be essential key. Thus, our center establishes the study group for analyzing and utilization of satellite remote sensing data together with Yamaguchi Prefectural Industrial Technology Institute and local companies, and contributes to create local new industries/business and its overseas development.
